Slate is a fine-grained rock which is mined all over the world. In America most of the slate roofing tiles come from Vermont. Slate does not absorb water like other stone and has been used for roofing since the 1800’s. The stone is unique and beautiful but homeowners should do their diligence before hiring a contractor to install slate. The vast majority of roofing contractors, as well as general contractors, know very little about slate roofs.
